Qtest’s CIMS 1000 ( Characteristic Impedance Measurement System).

CIMS is a measurement equipment designed to measure Characteristic Impedance of printed circuit board. It uses the L (inductance) and C (capacitance) of the trace to calculate the resultant impedance. This method is far more consistent and much more robust than using the TDR method. The reason is that there is very little need for any maintenance except change of pogo pins on the probes which may affect the L and C reading thus giving errors in the final impedance.

The measurement from the CIMS has been correlated to TDR and laboratory equipment used for such measurement and found to be very reliable and consistent.

The lower cost of the CIMS compared to the TDR is also a very attractive option for many companies.
